Blog Title: Beyond the Screen: 10+ Fun Screen-Free Activities for Kiwi Kids

Mar 25, 2026

We’ve all been there. It’s a rainy Tuesday (or a very long school holiday Monday), and the temptation to hand over the iPad is real. While technology definitely has its place, there’s something magic about watching our kids get lost in "old-school" play.

At Bear & Moo, we are big believers in the power of imagination and the joy of getting a little bit messy. Whether you’re looking to burn off some energy or need 20 minutes of quiet time to finish a hot coffee, we’ve put together a list of our favourite screen-free activities that the whole family will love.

1. The Ultimate Backyard Scavenger Hunt

Grab a container or bucket (anything for collecting "treasures"!) and head outside. Create a simple list of things for your little ones to find: a yellow leaf, a smooth stone, something fuzzy, and something that makes a sound. It’s a great way to get them moving and connecting with nature.

2. Become a "Picasso" on the Pavement

If you have a driveway or a patio, sidewalk chalk is your best friend. Draw a giant hopscotch, create a "town" for toy cars, or let them trace each other's outlines. The best part? The next rain shower does the cleanup for you! Pro tip: Chalk also works wonders on trampoline mats for a "bouncy" art session.

3. Indoor Fort Adventures

On those classic Kiwi rainy days, move the fun inside. Use every cushion, sheet, and peg in the house to build an epic fort. Once it’s up, it becomes a reading nook, a spaceship, or a secret base for a tea party.

4. Get Messy with DIY Playdough or Clay

Sensory play is incredible for development. Whip up a batch of homemade playdough (or just buy it like I do!). Add some biodegradable glitter or dried flowers from the garden to take the creativity to the next level. Pro tip: Put down a Messy Mat first to keep your floors safe!

5. Master the Obstacle Course

Use what you’ve got! Line up dining chairs to crawl under, cushions to hop over, and a Connetix tower to run around. Time the kids to see if they can beat their personal best, it’s a guaranteed way to burn off that extra energy before nap time.

6. "Ice Block" Excavation

This is a summer favourite! Freeze small plastic animals or toys in a large container of water. Give the kids some "tools" (like a spray bottle of warm water or a wooden spoon) and let them work at "rescuing" the toys. It keeps them focused for ages!

7. Shadow Puppet Theatre

When the sun goes down (or in a dark hallway), use a torch and a blank wall to put on a show. It’s a simple, cozy way to wind down before bed without the blue light of a screen.

8. Backyard Picnic & Star Gazing

Who says dinner has to be at the table? Lay out a picnic rub, pack some snacks into your favourite Lunchboxes, and head outside. If it’s evening, see how many stars you can spot together.

9. Loose Parts Play

Sometimes the best "toy" isn't a toy at all. Give them a box of "loose parts", think pinecones, old keys, ribbons, and cardboard tubes. You’ll be amazed at the stories they create when left to their own devices.

10. Cozy Up with a New Story

And lastly, my favourite - a great book. Whether it’s a board book for the tiny ones or an empowering story for the older kids, reading together is the ultimate way to bond and build those literacy skills.

Wrapping Up Screen-free time doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Often, it’s the simplest activities that create the best memories. We’d love to see what you and your "Bears" and "Moos" get up to, tag us on Instagram @bearandmoonz so we can see your adventures!
